MONDAY DESIGN FUN – Ghostly Calls to Action

There are just some things you don’t put much thought into. But writing a strong, relevant call-to-action (CTA) should not one of those things. Today’s marketer must understand that a dreary direct-response call-to-action can bring on an untimely death to any campaign.

But be warned: The same effort that goes into conjuring up the liveliest of calls-to-action needs to be put into its design and position as well.

What placement will draw the most attention to your CTA? How should it look to captivate the audience and get them to ACT?

BEEN THERE, DONE THAT

Bold buttons in contrasting or bright colors that “pop” are common. BUY NOW, SIGN UP NOW, TAKE A TOUR, REGISTER, CREATE AN ACCOUNT, SEE IT IN ACTION, DOWNLOAD NOW, ADD TO CART, ORDER NOW…we’re used to seeing these action-oriented queues in white text over colored backgrounds surrounded by rounded corners and a shadow. But one trend you may not have noticed creeping into web pages is the ghost button.

A NEW APPARITION

The ghost button does not have a bold or colored backdrop. Rather, its background is transparent. The call-to-action copy is delineated by a subtle border and whatever image or background that appears on the web page shows through behind the button.

ONEXRAPIXEL.com describes this new appealing design trend in “Ghost Buttons – The Brand New Design Trend” published on April 28.

GHOST VS BOLD

Here’s how a ghost button looks in a real-world application compared to a more “traditional” bold colored button. Reply with a comment to let us know which appeals more to you (and why).
